18th March 2026 - Penny Barnes - French Saints
For our March meeting we were honoured to welcome one of our long standing and stalwart club members, Mrs Penny Barnes.
Her presentation was somewhat enigmatically entitled French Saints, but it was not an ecclesiastical discourse more a selection of wines whose places of origin bore the names of saints.

Penny is a very knowledgeable wine enthusiast having completed all the WSET courses. She and her husband Jon travel extensively in Europe in pursuit of interesting wines to savour and buy. (Jon spoke to us last year on wines of the 'Stans).

After a welcome wine - Lidl's champagne (again on special offer for Mothers' Day), we were presented with
wines that were all sourced in the UK from Majestic, Lidl, Sainsbury and Waitrose and, of course selected by Penny.

There was a historical reference to the Saints and a historical quiz (Penny had done her homework).

The wines tasted were:

White -
Domaine de Vaux Saint Georges (Touraine Sauvignon Blanc) 2023 from Majestic priced at £13:00 (£12:00)
Domaine Saint Fereol (Viognier) IGP Pays d'Oc 2024 from Majestic priced at £17:00 (£15:00)
AC St Verain 2022 (Chardonnay) from Majestic priced at £18:50 (£16:50)

Rose -

Parcel Series Saint Estephe 2020 (Merlot, Cabernet Franc) from Majestic priced at £30:00 (£15:00)
Saint Joseph 2023 (Syrah) from Waitrose priced at £20:00

We agreed that the wines were excellent. Penny did us proud.

Thanks also are due to Peter and Sandra Ball for the buffet catering

Note on the Majestic pricing - the initial price is per bottle, the price in brackets is the price if you buy six bottles (their "Mix-Six" offer)
