18th June - Andy Finklaire - Wines of Alsace
For our June event, we had a member of the club presenting wines from the Alsace Region of France.

Andy Finklaire has travelled widely in France (having a house in the Burgundy region) and is passionate about the wines.
He chose a wide selection from Alsace for us to try (although he did describe the selection as "a raid on Carrefour in Calais") which shows how well French hypermarkets stock wines of France.

We were also able learn more about the area from Andy's collection of photographs and memories of the region and what you can expect from the winemakers there.

List of wines (prices in Euros as they were all purchased in France):
1. Cremant D'Alsace 8.50
A good mousse, with biscuity aromas. Fruity with balanced yeasty notes on the palate - a good wine to start
2. Alsace Pino Blanc, 2019, Domaine Ostertag 16.90
Aroma of lemon peel, which arried through to the palate giving a fresh citrus flavour (unfortunately one of the bottles had a bad cork)
3. Alsace Pinot Noir, Augustin Florentin 2023 15.00
The only red, and promoted to this point as it quite a light wine. Pale red in colour, with araoma of cherries on the nose. On the palate was quite acidic, and rather thin. This needs food to complement it.
4, JB Adam Riesling Reserve 10.00
This white has a typical "petroly" nose, and shows a dry fruity palate with a long finish
5. Alsace Grand Cru, Kaefferkopf, Pinot Gris, 2023 8.89
This wine shows a darker straw appearance, and is described as demi-sec which gives a medium sweet palate, balanced with good acidity and a hint of spice in the finish
6. Alsace Grand Cru, Schonenebourg, Dopff au Moulin, Riesling 2020 13.60
Again as a Reisling, this wine shows the typical arama of petrol, with typical fruit and floral flavours to taste. Dry with good balancing acidity
7. Alsace Grand Cru, Gewurztraminer, Schonenebourg, Becker & Zellenberg 2022 ( Moelleux) 16.65
This wine displays a "rose petal" aroma on the nose (reminicent of Turkish Delight). Sweet, witht he rose petal flavour, balanced by lovely smooth citrus notes.
8. Gewurztraminer Vendage Tardive 2020, Wolfberffer 15.00
A deep yellow in the glass, with lychees, mango and tropical fruit on the nose. Again, as a desert wine, this is quite sweet, but with balancing acidity to give a really smooth finish. An excellent wine to finish an evening.

Thanks are also due to Sue Rossell for providing the excellent finger buffet at half time.
