June June 15th 2023 – Same grape different country- Jonathan Rogers
On Thursday 15th June we welcomed Jonathan Rogers of Vin wine merchants for the first time. Jonathan has had an interesting history in the wine trade spanning 25 years and in 2016 started Vin wine merchants in Emsworth. Only selling wines from smaller producers around the world Jonathan also runs wine courses, tastings, and local vineyard tours from his shop in Emsworth.
The focus of the event was to highlight the impact terroir, climate and region can have on a grape varietals characteristics. Jonathan presented two famous varieties and a couple of lesser-known grapes for comparison. The first pairing was a Sauvignon Blanc from South Africa, a subtle light Sancerre like wine, and a modern herbaceous offering from Chile. Whilst the differences were pronounced the room was split as to which they preferred. For the next pairing a consensus formed that a Marsanne from one of Australia’s oldest vineyards was preferred to a more perfumed wine from France. Lively discussion took place about both red pairings of Merlot and Marselan with general agreement that the standout bottle on the night was the Pizzorno Marselan Canellones from Uruguay. An unusual wine from a lesser-known country.
Special thanks to Brian and Sue Wiseman for providing an excellent Italian themed buffet enjoyed by all.
