November 2022 - Wines of Portugal.

Our penultimate tasting as the IBM WAS was held in a new location thanks to the barn roof being in need of repair. The hall behind the barn was function but quite cosy!

Tim Syrad is a new presenter to our club, though he has a large footprint in wine sales, runs two tasting clubs of his own and arranges and speaks on wine tasting holidays across the world.  He is  a very knowledgeable wine educator and quite an enthusiast.

We were treated to a delightful selection of wines from each of the main wine producing areas of Portugal and some blends of grapes only grown in Portugal and hitherto unknown to us.  Tim told us that Portugal is a much improving producer, having had a reputation for modest wines (who of us doesn't remember Mateus Rosé) and artisanal blends. There is much replanting of vines and investment is steel fermenting equipment with a consequent improvement in consistency of product and of quality. The white wines he showed were elegant and well priced. The reds, with the exception of a gutsy 2014 Alantejo, were a little young and, perhaps, in need of  cellaring.  Tim sells through his website and you can book your next wine holiday there too.  It was an excellent exposition from an expert presenter whom we hope to invite back next year.
